Breastfeeding Peer Counseling
In St. Clair County, 65.5 percent of the moms who participate in the Women, Children and Infants program(WIC) breastfeed their babies. WIC provides breastfeeding education classes at no cost to WIC clients as well as on going support to breastfeeding moms, and can assist with the cost a breastmilk pump.
YOUR St. Clair County Health Department also provides a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor program, which supports our mothers and raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding.
Often in the weeks or months after delivery there is a large decline in breastfeeding rates, even when mothers get off to a good start. New mothers need support of family, friends and health professionals in order to achieve their own breastfeeding goals.
