Your St Clair County Health Department Community Health division educates St Clair County citizens off all ages by dispensing tools and information promoting health and wellness. Your Health Department educators travel to schools, health fairs and conferences daily, as well as partnering with other agencies and organizations to enhance the health and wellness of individuals and communities as a whole.
One program administered by your Health Department is the Baby Think It Over program. Baby Think It Over (BTIO) is a 5-day pregnancy prevention program that targets jr. high school age students. The program consists of 5 class periods focusing on youth developmental assets. The students also have the opportunity to care for an infant simulator for 1-3 days. Our intent is that the lessons addressing developmental assets and the experience of "parenting" will provide students with an understanding of the importance of postponing pregnancy and childbearing. This program is evaluated by the use of pre/post tests.
The goal of the program is to increase youth developmental assets, which include self-esteem, decision-making skills, self responsibilty, assertiveness skills, and goal setting. The ultimate goal is to decrease the instances of teen pregnancy within St. Clair County
The target audience is Jr. High School age children 11 - 14 years old, and the students must be enrolled in a St. Clair County School District.
